The researchers then compared the results of the eight weeks of treatment with the placebo group to the four weeks of treatment with the PDE5 inhibitor. At the end of the eight weeks, there was a significant reduction in the number of heartburn-related deaths, as well as an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as cardiovascular death and nonfatal myocardial infarction. PDE5 inhibitors are generally considered safe and effective in treating heartburn, according to a previous study.
